Below is the list of the SIG panels which will be held at the conference (the list is being updated)

1/ Online Humor SIG invites everyone to submit their recent research on internet humor to the panel!

Description: The internet has increasingly become a venue for generating and reproducing humor. It has had an impact on the content and form of humor, the ways it spreads, as well as on the reception of humorous messages. The panel will address questions like the globalization / localization of humor, the metapragmatics of creating and sharing humor, the relationship between humor and hate speech, different genres of online humor, and many more.

Organizers: Liisi Laineste and Anastasiya Fiadotava
Special panel participant: Villy Tsakona

2/ Artificial Intelligence of Humor/Computational Humor SIG

Organizers: Julia Taylor, Tristan Miller, Christian Hempelmann

3/ Humor and religion SIG invites everyone to submit their recent research to one of our two panels!

Thematic session: „Humour as a response to tragedy and suffering: Joking about and during religious tragedies”

The 2025 ISHS conference is taking place in the beautiful historic city of Krakow, Poland. Yet, in about 90 minutes from Krakow lies the most sombre legacy of the Holocaust: the concentration and extermination camps of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Which prompted us to ask, can the Holocaust be addressed with a humorous lens? Can other tragic experiences be approached through humour? This panel seeks to explore the different functions of humour about and during religious tragedies; it aims to address the power of humour to heal, provoke and rethink the relationship between religious faith and suffering through the lens of humour.

General Session: “Humour and Religion in the Past, Present and Future”

The 2025 ISHS conference provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the works of scholars exploring the field of humour (and related phenomena such as laughter, jokes, and the comic) and religion. This panel seeks to explore the breadth of research which is taking place across religious traditions, historical periods, and around the globe. We welcome submissions from researchers at all levels of their career within the humanities and social sciences, as well as practitioners.

If you wish to contribute please do email Dr Nicole Graham (nicole.graham@kcl.ac.uk) and Dr Lina Liederman (lina.liederman@gmail.com) in advance of submitting via the portal.
